Interview with Madonna

"I'm destroying my ego".   Silvia Bizio. LA REPUBBLICA and CLARIN.

She plays in the Swept away remake, by Lina Wertmüller, directed by her husband. The diva is ready to concern about ecology issues.

Wrapped in a brown dress by Alexander McQueen that stresses her perfect shape, Madonna (44), speaks about Swept Away, a remake of Lina Wertmüller's film, in Los Angeles, with Adriano Giannini. Her husband and director, Guy Ritchie, is not present. He stayed at home with the children, Lourdes and Rocco. The actress and singer reveals that maternity and today's world's bad condition were major factors to convince her to take advantage of her fame and assume a deeper social compromise.

Swept Away makes you believe that love between a billionaire and a fisher is possible.

It is, except here it doesn't work because her husband intercepts the letter Peppe had sent her. "But I've come to believe that she returns to New York with her husband and soon decides to come back to the island".

To sum up, you believe in romantic love.

"Absolutely. I would have liked to see them together at the end. But Guy didn't think there were reasons for that".

What was it like to shoot so many love scenes with Adriano Giannini (Giancarlo's son)?

"I repeat what they always say: actors don't find anything romantic about shooting a sex scene with a twenty-people team all around them. Besides, exciting as it my be for many, I don't like the idea of kissing another man in front of my husband".

Do you see any parallel between your character's transformation and your real life?

"From my life of transgressions to the mother and wife? Of course, it's inevitable. Children force you to get out of yourself and think of another person, an analogy that can be perfectly applied to my character. I work on liberation through the deconstruction of my ego. I'm destroying it".

What do you mean?

"Let's get it straight. Destroying one's ego is hard for everybody, not just for Madonna. Everything I've done, since I was a girl, was motivated by my ego. When you don't feel good or attractive enough, when you feel judged and rejected and are scared of growing old... I know I've inspired many people with my work, but today what I want is to contribute to world peace".

An ambitious goal. How do you intend to achieve it?

"According to science, in 50 years' time we will no longer have a planet, because nuclear wastes will have contaminated it. I can write beautiful songs, but what's the point if there isn't a world to listen to them? I feel I must think of human kind, of saving this world. And because I'm a famous person I can illuminate people regarding these issues".
