From fine shoemaker to fierce butcher.  Appeared in La Nación.
New York- Daniel Day Lewis is definitely not just another "star". When Martin Scorsese thought of offering a role in "Gangs of New York", Daniel Day Lewis was working as a shoemaker in Florence, Italy, and the idea of returning to be faced with a camera sounded less than appealing.

"I only act when I have an inner need to do it, a sort of compulsion that makes me sure that's the moment to play someone else. It think it would be irresponsible to do it when I don't feel that obligation in the inside".

"I drifted apart because I believe what I do when I'm not acting turns up all the more useful when I'm back to acting".

"To me, acting is always being giving away something mine, I couldn't do it all the time. I need to get out, see the world, fill with experiences to come back and act properly".

Note: Day Lewis is married to actress Rebecca Miller, the writer's daughter. They met when Day-Lewis visited Miller to prepare his role as John Proctor in "The crucible" (1996). They have two children, who they live with in Europe, mainly in Ireland.
