Only 4% of working people have graduated

The Dean of the UBA assured that in the Argentina for every hundred employees there are only four with a university degree. He also asked for the youth to be able to read and write, at least, when they first come to college.

"We need more university graduates and, in order to have them, we should invest more money and effort. That is why the issue of dropouts is so serious; it is a key issue," added Dean of the UBA Jaim Etcheverry in an afternoon full of reproach for secondary education.

Regarding that, precisely, the dean said that the university demanded from high school "people who have an idea of the world they live in, a certain ability to abstract, people who understand what they read, I think that would do".

He alerted that last year, from the 73 thousand boys and girls who registered for the Ciclo Básico Común (CBC), "30% did not even begin to study one of their subjects".

"The economic situation is one factor, but it does not explain the whole phenomenon" explained to the press the Secretary of University Policy of the Nation Juan Carlos Pugliese, few weeks ago. "There are other causes, such as problems related to high school, the rigidity of the courses of study, the fact that when it comes to college the only valuable thing is the diploma, among other issues. Also the need for the students to decide on their vocation at such an early age".

Only in the year 2001, more than four out of ten students fled the universities all over the country, and 60% of them did so because they had to go looking for a job.

The overwhelming figures simply support these opinions: in the last 14 years the number of students duplicated from 661.315 in 1989 to 1.200.000 today.
